2024 Grant Recipient: Carol Lusignea Memorial Award

THE GRANT

The Carol Lusignea Memorial Award is $1,000 awarded to a graduating Senior at Lower Moreland HighSchool, the district where Carol taught for 25 years. The recipient is chosen by the PTA based on qualifications established by our award.

ABOUT THE AWARD

"The Carol Lusignea Memorial Award is awarded to a student that exemplifies Carol’s qualities of compassion, kindness, positivity, leadership skills and a dedication to healthy living. This student is interested in pursuing a career focused on Carol’s passion for teaching, health, fitness, or sports and recreation."

ABOUT THE 2024 AWARD WINNER

The 2024 award winner is Mia Krug! Mia is attending the University of Central Florida to study Health Sciences of a pre-clinical track. She was part of the Jewish Student Union and was a straight A student.

Mia was a former K-5 student of Carol's. After the award ceremony, we were able to meet with Mia and her family. With tears in everyone's eyes, Mia shared her love and memories of Carol, sharing that her elementary school experience was largely shaped by the positivity of Carol (aka Mrs. Lusignea). Through Mrs. Lusignea's interactive health curriculum, memorable PE activities, and her visits to Mia's lunch table to discuss healthy eating habits, Mia carries Carol's positive legacy with her as she begins her college journey.

This years grant of $1,000 was made possible by your donations along with a surprise gift of $500 from the Lower Moreland Field Hockey tea in memory of the 21 years she coached this team.

WHY WE BEGAN THE CAROL LUSIGNEA MEMORIAL AWARD:

This award is where our fund began. Carol was long-time teacher, coach, and colleague in the Lower Moreland (LM) School District. She coached Varsity Field Hockey for over 20 years, and taught K-5 Health and Physical Education for over 25 years. She was a beloved colleague and was engaged in many of the districts wellness initiatives. After Carol's passing in 2022, Lower Moreland School District asked us if they could create an award in Carol's name. We were moved and knew that she would be honored. Initially, this award was going to be a 4-year award funded by the PTA. But with your support, this award is now proudly funded for the long-term.

This year, Brian and Lindsay presented the Carol Lusignea Memorial Award at the Lower Moreland Senior Awards Class of 2024. They, along with Bill, had a moving and joyful conversation with the award winner, Mia, and her family after the ceremony.
